Two years ago, Fowler hit the game-winning buzzer beater in an 86-85 win that landed on the SportsCenter Top 10 and he followed that up with an epic step-back 3-pointer with 5 seconds left in overtime to send it to double OT. Fowler would finish with a season-high 18 points and went 7-of-9 from the field while adding three boards in 25 minutes as LR topped Wingate by three after 50 minutes of basketball.

GAME INFORMATION: Final: Lenoir-Rhyne 108, Wingate 105 (2 OT) Records: Lenoir-Rhyne (9-13, 4-10 SAC), Wingate (14-9, 9-5 SAC) Location: Wingate, N.C. | Cuddy Arena

STATS OF THE GAME: - It didn't look like the game would even get to overtime as Wingate led by seven with 1:42 to go in regulation and six with 51 seconds. A T.J. Nesmith 3-point play cut it to three and then the senior would score five more points in the next 29 seconds to put LR up 81-79 with 10 seconds left. - Wingate's Jarren Cottingham hit a driving layup with four seconds left to even the game at 81 and send it to overtime. - In the first OT, it was the Bears who would take the upper hand. A Fowler triple put the Bears up six at 90-84 with 2:36 to play. However, Donell Nixon would hit three free throws and Andreas Wilson connected on a 3-point to even the game at 90. - A jumper by John Massey made it 94-92 Wingate and Destin Clark was fould with 13 seconds to go. Clark went just 1-of-2 from the line, leaving the door open for the dramatic Fowler three to send it to double OT. - With the game tied at 98, LR took over. Jalen Johnson buried a three and Nas Tyson converted a layup in the lane to put LR up five. Malik LeGania's three-point play made it 107-100 with 35 seconds but the Bulldogs wouldn't go away. - Down 108-100 after a Johnson free throw with 23 seconds, Nixon hit a lay up and Wilson stole the ensuing inbounds pass and nailed a triple to make it a one-possession game at 108-105. - Tyson was fouled with just under two seconds to play and went 0-of-2 from the line but a Wingate heave at the buzzer from 85 feet wasn't close as LR prevailed. - Nesmith had arguably his best game of his career with 29 points and a career-high 12 boards before fouling out. Johnson went for 24, including nine in the two overtime periods, while hitting 4-of-7 from long range. - Fowler went 4-of-6 from three and accounted for 18 points off the bench. Hamilton Campbell added nine and five assists and Tyson had seven points, seven boards and four assists. - LeGania added a season-best 10 points and five boards.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: - LR had to come back in regulation and pull it out in OT despite losing L.J. McCoy at the 15 minute mark of the second half with an injury. - Nesmith fouled out with 1:14 left in the first OT period. - The win ended an eight-game road losing streak for LR. - This was the 85th 100-point scoring game in program history for LR and just the second since the end of the 2020 season. - LR is now 75-10 all-time when scoring 100 points and 10-1 under Everick Sullivan. - LR also snapped a six-game losing streak overall. - Wingate's Wilson erupted for 30 points off the bench to go with his 25-point performance against the Bears in Hickory earlier this season. He also had a 17-point performance against LR in 2021.

UP NEXT: The Bears will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Tusculum for a 4 p.m. tip.

The friendlies will feature three home matches along with contests at Bryan Park and at Davidson.

"We are looking forward to playing a competitive spring schedule that provides our current players opportunities to demonstrate their ability to positively impact games," said Reeves. "Ben Rosenblatt will continue as our club captain, after transitioning into the role following Marco Vesterholm's graduation this fall," said Reeves. "Ben has built up great respect within our group for his daily drive and commitment that has seen him develop into one of our most influential players. Franc and Mac were selected by their peers and staff to step up into bigger leadership roles as additional captains. We have a large senior class that have a great deal to offer as a collective leadership group and we will lean on their experience for input into how best to maximize this group. Officially adding Franc and Mac means they can help in maintaining high standards both on and off the field which we believe is vital to a successful season."

Opening this year’s collegiate baseball schedule in Kannapolis is the D3 Showcase, featuring eight different schools from along the east coast. Consisting of a jam-packed schedule of games from February 23-26, admission to the weekend showcase is free and open to the public.

Kicking off the three Division I matchups is Queens College and East Carolina University on Tuesday, March 7. Queens, led by third-year head coach Ross Steedley, is in their first season of competition at the Division I level after being active in the Division II level from 1995-2022. East Carolina is led by head coach Cliff Godwin and 2023 American Athletic Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year RHP Carter Spivey. The Pirates are three-time defending AAC regular season champions and have hosted the NCAA regionals on nearly an annual basis, advancing to the Greenville Super Regional in 2022 before falling to the No. 9 ranked Texas Longhorns.

Just one day after the Queens/East Carolina matchup, the Charlotte 49ers make the short drive up Interstate 85 to Cannon City, where they will play host to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on Wednesday, March 8. Charlotte is under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Robert Woodard, who kicked off his career in the 2013 season as pitching coach for the Seahawks before later joining the 49ers. Charlotte, who is in their final season of competition in Conference USA, holds four players on the 2023 Conference USA Preseason All-Conference Team. UNCW makes the trip over from the coast for their first-ever game at Atrium Health Ballpark for their final game of non-conference play in 2023. The Seahawks, who were recently picked second in the Colonial Athletic Association coaches poll, are led by head coach Randy Hood, who helped develop Cannon Ballers 2022 INF/OF Brooks Baldwin.

The following week, Davidson College visits for a matchup with Western Carolina University on Tuesday, March 14. The Wildcats had three different games planned to be played at minor league ballparks in 2022 (Kannapolis, Charlotte, and Durham), but saw all three postponed due to inclement weather. Despite being unable to dodge the raindrops for their neutral site games, Davidson turned in an impressive 43-13 record, 20-4 in Atlantic-10 Conference play, under now fifth-year head coach Rucker Taylor. Western Carolina pays a visit to Kannapolis under first-year head coach Alan Beck, who makes his return to his alma mater in Cullowhee.

Rounding out the College Series slate is a Division II matchup of two local powerhouses in Catawba and Belmont Abbey on Tuesday, March 28. Catawba, who matched up against Wingate in 2022 at Atrium Health Ballpark, faces off against a Belmont Abbey team looking to build on their 2022 season which saw them advance to the NCAA Southeast Regionals.

Tickets for each of the College Series matchups are available at kcballers.com.

No tickets are required for the D3 Showcase, however, donations at the gate will benefit the U Deserve A Chance Foundation.

University of Miami head football coach Mario Cristobal announced the hiring of Shannon Dawson as the Hurricanes’ offensive coordinator. Dawson’s hire is pending completion of a standard University background check.

Dawson spent the past four seasons at the University of Houston, including the last three as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He joined the program as tight ends coach at Houston in January 2019 after three seasons as offensive coordinator at Southern Miss.

In Dawson’s three seasons as quarterbacks coach with the Cougars (2020-22), Houston quarterbacks combined to throw 87 touchdown passes (13th nationally) behind a 65.3 completion percentage (19th nationally) and 10,008 passing yards (21st nationally). Dawson tutored signal caller Clayton Tune to a record-setting career. In 2022, Tune set the American Athletic Conference single-season touchdown passes record (40). The first-team all-conference honoree ranked third nationally in passing touchdowns, third in total offense (355.2) and fifth in passing yards per game (313.4).

Dawson’s Cougars ranked eighth nationally in passing offense (314.0) this past season. Houston wide receiver Nathaniel Dell led the nation in receiving touchdowns (17) and receiving yards (1,398) while Matthew Golden set a Houston true freshman record with seven receiving touchdowns. Houston ranked 15th nationally in scoring offense (35.6), 22nd in first downs offense (314), 23rd in passing offense (271.6) and 25th in red zone offense (.891).

In his final year at Southern Miss (2018), Dawson helped guide the Golden Eagles as the No. 3 team nationally in completion percentage, completing 69.2 percent of their passes. Sophomore quarterback Jack Abraham ranked third in the league and 22nd nationally with an average of 260.8 passing yards per game while leading the nation with a completion percentage of 73.1 percent and ranking fourth nationally with 24.8 completions per game. Sophomore receiver Quez Watkins earned first team All-Conference USA honors after finishing second in the league with nine touchdown receptions while true freshman center Trace Clopton earned FWAA Freshman All-America honors.

Despite missing his starting quarterback for three games and in limited action in two more contests in 2017, the Golden Eagles were still able to amass 424.6 total yards per game, just behind league champion Florida Atlantic and West Division champ North Texas. His efforts also helped former Golden Eagle Ito Smith become just the 10th running back in FBS history to rush for over 4,000 yards and collect at least 1,000 receiving yards.

In his first season with Golden Eagles, Dawson mentored Nick Mullens in his senior season, who ended his career first in passing yards and touchdowns thrown. Mullens signed a free-agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers heading into this season. Southern Miss also set a school record for total offensive yards in a game with 702 against Rice.

Dawson also helped build some of the nation’s most prolific offenses at West Virginia, where he spent four seasons, including his last three as offensive coordinator. In his last season in Morgantown, WVU ranked 12th in the nation in total offense, averaging 499.8 yards per game, and was ninth nationally in passing offense at 317 yards per contest. The Mountaineers averaged 33.5 points per game and set a school record by scoring at least 30 points in eight consecutive games. WVU also averaged more than 182 rushing yards per game.

A native of Clinton, La., Dawson played his college football at Wingate (N.C.) University as a quarterback and wide receiver. He began his coaching career as receivers coach at his alma mater in 2002.

Dawson linked up with former Kentucky head coach Hal Mumme in 2003-04 to help revive a program at Southeastern Louisiana that had been dormant for 17 years. He also coached with Mumme at New Mexico State in 2005.

Dawson went to Millsaps College as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2006-07. The Majors won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship both years, the first back-to-back titles in school history, and quarterback Juan Joseph was two-time SCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Millsaps played in the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2006.

Dawson moved to Stephen F. Austin University as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2008-10. With the Lumberjacks averaging only 16 points a game during a winless 2007 season, Dawson helped orchestrate an amazing turnaround in SFA’s offensive fortunes. In his first season, the Lumberjacks ranked third in the nation in passing offense, 13th in total offense and 14th in scoring offense.

SFA won or shared the Southland Conference championship the next two seasons, advancing to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs both years. In 2009-10, SFA led the nation in passing offense while ranking in the top six nationally in total offense and scoring. Quarterback Jeremy Moses was a two-time All-American, two-time Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and won the Walter Payton Award as the FCS National Player of the Year. Wide receivers Dominique Edison and Contrevious Parks went on to play in the NFL.

Dawson and his wife, Chelsea, have two daughters, Acelyn and Baker.
