A California burger joint will open its fourth North Carolina store, this time in Monroe, as the chain expands in the Charlotte region.

The Habit Burger Grill, known for its cooked-to-order chargrilled burgers, will debut March 1 at 2121 W. Roosevelt Blvd. near Monroe Crossing Road, the company exclusively told The Charlotte Observer on Tuesday.

The Monroe store is part of The Habit Burger’s expansion plan to open 15 stores in the Charlotte region. Another store is planned at Mooresville at 379 W. Plaza Drive in the former Popeye’s site off Interstate 77. The company does not have a schedule yet for opening the store, company officials said.

Along with its burgers cooked over an open flame, Habit Burger’s menu includes sandwiches such as marinated chicken, sushi-grade ahi tuna and tenderloin steaks, sides like tempura green beans and salads, plus milkshakes.

The Monroe restaurant will offer dine-in, takeout and drive-thru with curbside pick-up and delivery available via The Habit mobile app and online at order.habitburger.com.

Indoor self-serve kiosks also are available. Delivery is through third-party vendors: Grubhub, DoorDash, Postmates and Uber Eats.

Both Charlotte-area stores will be free-standing buildings, 2,500 to 3,000 square feet, the Observer previously reported. Both stores have drive-thrus. Before the COVID pandemic, The Burger Habit chain was 65% dine-in.

Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

▪ On Saturday, the first 200 customers at 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. receive a free Charburger, fries and drink.

▪ On Monday and Tuesday: The first 200 customers at 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. receive a free chargrilled meal from a pre-set menu.

Customers must be CharClub member and present VIP invitation by signing up at habitburger.com/monroe/.

The first Habit Burger Grill opened in 1969 in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969.

The Habit Burger Grill has over 350 restaurants in 14 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia and Washington.

There are 12 international locations, five in China and seven in Cambodia.

The Carolinas stores are part of the company’s expansion plan to open 2,000 stores in the U.S. and 10,000 worldwide, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.

In 2019, Habit Burger opened two stores locally, one at 7740 Charlotte Highway in Indian Land, S.C., and another at 209 S. Kings Drive in Charlotte. The South Carolina store is still open but the Charlotte store closed within a year.

The Habit Burger’s other North Carolina stores are in Clemmons, Burlington and Fayetteville. Another store is expected to open this year in Greensboro.

First Tiger CSC Academic All-District Honoree since 2012

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson forward Hunter Tyson (Monroe, N.C./Piedmont) has been named to the 2022-23 Academic All-District Men’s Basketball Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

Tyson is now eligible for Academic All-America honors. The three-team Academic All-Americans will be announced in mid-March. Clemson’s most recent Academic All-American in men’s basketball was Bobby Conrad, a third-team selection in 1980.

Tyson, a three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection, has started all 27 games for the Tigers this season and leads in scoring and rebounding at 15.3 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per contest.

He has compiled 12 double-doubles this season which is good for second in the ACC and 14th nationally. Tyson has averaged 8.0 defensive rebounds per game – first in the ACC and fourth in the country. His total rebounds (253) are fifth in the conference and 29th nationally.

Tyson has netted double figure scoring 24 times and double-digit rebounds on 13 occasions. He scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds in a win over NC State. It was the first 30-15 game for a Tiger since Horace Grant in 1987.

The Monroe, N.C. native was named ACC Player of the Week for his performance against the Wolfpack on Dec. 30. He was honored on Jan. 2 by the league. He was also named to the 2023 Naismith Hall of Fame Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Top 10 and the USBWA Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List.

MONROE, N.C. (WBTV) - Construction is off and running at the site of this year’s St. Jude Dream Home in Monroe, North Carolina.

Over the weekend dozens of volunteer brick masons from McGee Brothers and Huntley Brothers came out to help dream home builder Jeff Newton and his team from Newton Custom Homes and Realty lay the foundation of this year’s home.

The dream home is built from the ground up by professionals who all volunteer their time so that all of the money raised from selling tickets for a chance to win the home can go straight to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“Many of these guys work for different companies and they are competitors, but they come together to do this for these kids,” said Newton, who has been leading the charge for nine of the 10 years of the Charlotte campaign. “It’s a beautiful thing to see.”

Because there were more than 75 volunteers, they were able to get it all done in under three hours.

Matt Snyder of Carolina Ready Mix and his son Ellis come out to help each year. It’s particularly meaningful for them because just a few years ago Ellis was a St. Jude patient.

“We’ve been the family has walked into St. Jude and were told your child has cancer, said Matt. “It reaches a new level when it hits home, so every year, year after year it’s the least we can do.”

Matt says Ellis just turned 10 this week. Ellis was just 2 years old when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

“They really do save children’s lives,” said Matt. “He’s living proof [St. Jude] will not stop until no child dies at the dawn of the [of their life]. Can’t be more thankful for St. Jude.”

Ellis sees volunteering as his way to still give back to other kids fighting cancer. “I feel good because I’m helping the kids that need it,” said Ellis.

You will be able to get your ticket for a chance to win for $100 in July 2023. Our goal is to sell 30,000 tickets to raise $3 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

It’s National Margarita Day! But, do you know where to celebrate in Charlotte, North Carolina? AXIOS Charlotte put together a list of 15 spots you might want to check out for your tequila fix. This list includes quite a few of our faves that also offer tremendous food to complement your beverage. A few of the places include the following. AXIOS says a good place to start is Condado Tacos. I’m familiar with this one, because it’s located on Camden Rd. in South End right behind our office. AXIOS says they have four house margaritas along with specialty ones, too. And, there’s even a house flight with flavored mini house margaritas for the undecided. Another on the list is RuRu’s Tacos and Tequila on Providence Rd. on the outskirts of Charlotte. I mean, how can you go wrong? Tequila is in the name. We’ve been there several times, and it’s great. AXIOS suggests the Magic Mike for $10 or specialty item Prison Love for $12.

Next, we highlight Superica on Worthington Ave. in South End or on Providence Rd. in South Charlotte. We personally adore Superica for their fajitas, too! AXIOS says to order the O.G. for $10 if you want a classic. If you feel adventurous, they suggest The Matador for $12 with El Jimador Blanco, pineapple, lime and cilantro. And, another on the AXIOS list is Bakersfield on East Blvd. AXIOS says there’s five margs to choose from including a classic and fancier options such as the Mezcal and Cranberry Ginger. So, explore your options for National Margarita Day. And, check AXIOS full list here for more options!
